Meet Adam Carroll

Hi, my name is Adam Carroll. At the age of 28, on a motivational CD playing in my car, I heard Mark Victor Hansen say “public speaking is one of the most noble professions. You get to travel the world, impact people’s lives, and get paid really well to do it.” 

That was the trifecta. That is what I’d known all along but needed someone to say it for me to jump in with both feet. 

I was in a passionless sales job at the time. The job was an 8-6 slog, with the last three hours hitting the phones to knock out 80 dials to set 4-6 appointments for the next week. I rarely got 80 dials and dreaded the task. 

What I knew, deep down, was I had the chops to deliver a great presentation. After all, I’d given my high school commencement address, I was on the student radio station in college, and two people had asked me to be their best man which meant a killer best man speech. There were butterflies in my stomach everytime, sure, but I always knew that at some level my place was on stage.

A company based in Cincinnati, OH gave me my first break – they hired me to speak on an independent contract basis from time to time. I made maybe $200 per gig, and if I drove over a certain distance they’d pay mileage. And then, I convinced them to put me on the road full-time. The job they extended me paid an actual W2 salary, about $38,000 a year at the time, but I was doing what I loved to do – speaking professionally full-time. 

In the course of about 20 months, I presented to over 200,000 people through the job. (Half of which were 14 year olds who are the most apathetic audience you can possibly imagine.) And then 9/11 struck and within weeks, I and 50 other presenters were laid off. But by then, I KNEW  this kind of work was my jam.
